The answer to this is very simple. Terrifyingly simple. No one will lose anything other than perceived, impossible, never-to-be-had-in-reality revenue over this.

Once you’ve rented something thrice, it’s free for the rest of your life. You will, in effect, have bought it. There are no tapes to rewind or discs to return; there are hardly any distribution fees associated. Why should we go along with recreating the entire rental model, including its downsides?

A great solution to the problem of “film / TV rentals are all well and good, but what happens when your children want to watch Toy Story 2 645 times?”. When you’ve rented something enough times to cover the cost of owning an item, why can’t you then stream / watch it as many times as you like? Everybody wins.
